Once empty marsh lands directly north of downtown Chicago, the Gold Coast caught the eye of landowner Potter Palmer in the late 1800s as a worthy site for his 42-room mansion. It seems he set a precedent, as today the neighborhood boasts extraordinary architecture and stately homes. The Gold Coast boomed after Lake Shore Drive opened up, quickly becoming home to elegant high rises and restaurants, like the iconic Pump Room that has counted Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe among its guests.
